July 26, 2016, Santa Clara, CA – Today activists with the animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) protesting the “myth” of humane meat interrupted and ended the grand opening of Whole Foods Market at Santa Clara Square, marketed as “a flagship store for Whole Foods Market in Northern California.” Just as the ribbon cutting was about to start, activists unfurled warning tape. Two activists in bloody Whole Foods chef coats acted out the killing of a third activist, declaring that they were killing him humanely. The protest follows several investigations finding horrific violence against animals at Whole Foods farms and a letter by over a dozen animal rights groups and public figures condemning Whole Foods Market. After several minutes, store managers canceled the bread-breaking and ribbon cutting and let customers into the store.
